Speechless!

Feb 28, 2024 | Children's Adaptation, Parenting

There are a few times in life when words cannot express the feelings and thoughts in our minds. It is as if there is a broken power line between our spirits and hearts and our minds. These moments came for us as we interacted with our sons during their adoption.

While they were often too ashamed to admit when they had done something wrong, we had to work with them to make sure that they knew we still loved them in spite of their disobedience. Their poor attempts to cover up what they had done did not result in healing from being naughty.

However, the day came when we all went to the US court where their adoption was finalized. Did they wonder if this day would ever come? We watched in awe as the judge called each family in the courtroom to come forward. Our turn finally came, and the four of us approached the bench. The judge briefly asked each of us if we were prepared to proceed with the adoption. When it came to our sons, there was a pause, as silence filled their throats.

The disruption of their birth families had greatly impacted them. However, now was an opportunity to start over on a permanent basis, to actually become connected again. They were overcome with the implications of this. A new place to call home once and for all!

Some of the best moments in life are when we become overwhelmed by the emotions within us and we are left speechless. That does not mean that we are apprehensive (although our sons did sense some apprehension). When God answers our prayers beyond what we asked Him for, we get a glimpse of His glory and love for us. That can leave us speechless. Is this why Paul points out that the Holy Spirit intercedes for us according to the will of God when we are at a loss for words (Romans 8:26-27)?

When was a time when you were left speechless by something that happened to you? Please share what about your adoption affected you most deeply and for which you are most thankful.
