The Cost of Adoption

Jan 29, 2026 | God's Adoption of His Children, Parenting

We were not totally prepared for the costs of our adoption as parents. That is not to say that there was not full disclosure by the agency about the money involved. We struggled to come up with the money, the bulk of which was paid at the time we traveled overseas to do the actual adoption. What we did not realize was the cost in time and energy that it would take over the next several years to undo the years of pain that our adopted children had endured. We thought that we could just “love” them.

In the same manner, we are reminded that our adoption by our Heavenly Father was costly. The death of Jesus, the Son of God, was required for the atonement that made the adoption possible. No ordinary human being would be able to pay this price. The passion of Christ was almost unbelievable, because He died for the payment of sins of others, not His own (He had no sin!).

That cost covered everything, past, present, and future going back to Eden and culminating in the final victory over death and sin in the new heaven and new earth. However, there are times when we, His children, grieve Him because of the awful sins that we continue to do. We may choose not to believe in His love for us, causing our relationship with Him to suffer. Thankfully, that relationship is restored by our repentance. And He actually wants us to restore that relationship.

How often do you think about the cost of your adoption as God’s child? As you ponder this, be reminded of the immense love that God demonstrated in order to adopt you. Please feel free to leave a comment in the comment box.
